A trip to Belgium in a roof tent

To go on an adventure, the roof tent is more and more coveted! We tested with Stoemelings.

The campsite and the road trips have never been so popular: one allows to reconnect to nature, the other to explore many various landscapes in a limited time. To combine the best of 2 worlds, the roof tent has become a must for adventurers in search of freedom.

What is a roof tent worth it?

Combining practicality, comfort and security, the tent settles on the roof of a vehicle to transform it into real accommodation, enough to spend the night (almost) anywhere, in all serenity. Indeed, in height, it protects from animals and insects, as well as rain and humidity. Once installed on the roof bars, it unfolds in two stages three movements.

We tested with Stoemelings!

Buying a roof tent represents a certain investment, but it is possible to rent it at Stoemelings, a Belgian agency specializing in micro-payments. They provide the tent and its mattress, as well as all the camping equipment necessary for the length of the stay: electric stove, camping chairs, solar shower, water can … The roof bars can also be rented in addition.

Stoemeling also provides a map of spots where to spend the night. In Belgium, the wild campsite being strictly prohibited, you have to go to areas where bivouac is authorized. The ideal is to obtain the agreement of the owner of the land or the Forest Guarder if possible. The rule is simple: settle after 7 p.m., leave before 9 a.m. and leave no trace of its passage.

On an adventure: from Nassogne to Nisramont

With all this information in mind, direction Nassogne for our first night in a roof tent. Thanks to the Park4night application, which lists places where to spend the night legally, we spot a promising spot on the edge of the forest. But he is already occupied by another couple! We find another quiet place, away, unfold the tent, take out the table and the chairs, and prepare dinner: cheese and glass of wine under the stars, a flat vacation air … by searching the campsite, we discover a brazier to light a fire safely: happiness. The night goes smoothly. Not a noise, just the calm of nature …

When we wake up, we savor a coffee and a croissant before a quick brushing of outdoor teeth, then we hit the road, taking care not to leave anything behind us. The sun is shining: direction Lake Nisramont for a hike with picnic. The 14 kilometers reserve beautiful surprises in store for us: narrow passages along the water, a little elevation and the famous rock of the Héroux, which offers a spectacular panorama.

At the end of the afternoon, heading for Bomal, where we spotted the Guinguette of the Petit Bomal farm. Installed on a wooden terrace overlooking the fields, you savor a well -deserved aperitif, extended by a salty pancake. The place is so peaceful that we would stay there for hours, but It’s already time to find a spot for the night.

A more agitated night

We first plan to stay in the farm parking with the owners’ agreement, but ultimately, we prefer to look for a more isolated place. After a few kilometers, we find a quiet corner and install our camp … until we realize, 2 hours later, that we are on the way connecting Bomal to a village festival! For several hours, cars parade. Well, we can’t always be lucky! In the morning, a quick cleansing at the toilet glove and a walk on the small bat, before concluding the weekend on the terrace with a good burger. It’s already time to go back … but with one desire: to leave as soon as possible for a new micro-venture!

What we really loved

• Camping equipment, a real plus, because if we had to plan everything ourselves, we would surely have forgotten half! We do not always do everything you need for a weekend without incident …
• Return disconnected after only 2 days having felt like it left so much longer.
