Once hidden under a thick layer of foundation, freckles are now one of the most envied physical features. In recent years, the trend has grown so much that some people draw fake spots around their noses and cheekbones while others go so far as to have them tattooed. Whether they are natural or artificial, we explain how to highlight them.

Freckles: what exactly are they?

Also called ephelides, these small camel or brown spots are small, flat, asymmetrical lesions that result from increased pigmentation of the skin. They concentrate on areas in contact with light (face, neckline, shoulders, etc.) and become more pronounced when the skin is exposed to the sun. In winter, they fade.

Although their appearance varies seasonally, their numbers are genetically determined. Unlike moles, they cannot degenerate into melanoma. However, they mainly appear on fair skin, and therefore sensitive to UV rays. The use of sun protection is therefore all the more crucial in the event of exposure.

9 tips for enhancing freckles

1. Foundation

Start by working on your complexion using a subtle foundation, not too covering, such as a BB cream or a “bare skin effect” product. Avoid matte or opaque textures that will hide your freckles. To apply it naturally and avoid lines, gently pat the skin using a damp makeup sponge or a beauty blender (small egg-shaped sponge).

Tip: Is your foundation a little too opaque? Mix it with your day cream or with a dab of serum to lighten it.

2. The concealer

Do you want to reduce your dark circles or cover certain imperfections? Use a concealer (or concealer) topically. Apply a small amount of product in a thin layer to the areas to be concealed and blend with your finger or using your beauty blender until you can no longer see the transition between the concealer and the foundation.

3. Powder

If you have oily or combination skin, apply a light veil of loose powder to your T zone (chin, nose and forehead) using a soft brush. This step helps fade the shine from oilier areas of the face and keeps your makeup in place for longer. Use a completely transparent powder.

4. Sun powder

In summer, everyone dreams of a tanned complexion. To obtain it, avoid exposing yourself to the sun for hours and instead rely on bronzer. It is ideal for creating the illusion of a light tan on your blotchy skin. Take a flared or wide brush and apply it to areas generally affected by the sun, namely the chin, cheekbones, bridge of the nose, forehead and temples. Again, use it in moderation to avoid completely covering your freckles and don’t forget your neck and décolleté.

5. Blush

To revive your complexion and achieve a healthy glow, there’s nothing like blush (or blush). Choose a blush in powder form, this texture guarantees a soft effect. If you have fair skin, choose a pink blush which will brighten your face. For dark skin, orange blushes will work wonders while for black skin, a copper or brown blush is better.

6. The highlighter

To bring freshness to your complexion, apply a little highlighter to your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose and Cupid’s bow (at the top of your lips). Use a powder highlighter and a fan brush: they ensure you don’t apply too much material and obtain a light and natural result.

7. Mascara

Enhance your eyes by opting for a brown mascara, softer than black mascara. If you have very light hair, you can also use it to lightly comb your eyebrows to enhance their curve and intensify your look.

8. Eyeshadow

Freckles often stand out more when combined with warm colors. So bet on warm eyeshadows like bronze, copper or burgundy.

9. Lipstick

Same rule for lipsticks: turn to warm shades, like nude or red with an orange, coral or brown tint.
