Sainte-Anne restored, the Haut-Lieu of contemporary Montpellier art reopened its doors

After years of closure and four years devoted to a colossal restoration site, the Sainte-Anne Carré whose bell tower of any place in the heart of the city and beyond is finally accessible to all. At the inauguration, Michaël Delafosse, mayor -president of Montpellier Métropole -accompanied by assistants and Numa Hambursin, director of the MO.CO -, has honored heritage companies that worked this exceptional restoration.

The reopening of this emblematic place of contemporary art in Montpellier, is an event that is both heritage and artistic for the city. The neo-Gothic church completed in 1869, whose bell tower constitutes the culminating point and one of the symbols of the city, has become a contemporary art center, the Sainte-Anne Carré, in 1991. The exhibitions that were succeeded until its closure, in 2017, made it one of the essential places of the French institutional landscape, recognized for its programming that is both demanding and popular. Today, the building having found the whiteness of its stones and the purity of its light, in the prestigious image of Notre-Dame de Paris, is preparing to welcome artists and visitors again in the best conditions.

A site of 5 million euros and three highlights

Structure, pillars, roofing, stained glass, woodwork … Under the leadership of Altémed, city representative for this site, no less than 200 companions of various bodies of around thirty trades of art worked for the restoration of the building for a global investment of € 5 million excl. Three meetings are offered to the Montpellier to celebrate the reopening of the Sainte-Anne square.

As part of the reopening of the Sainte-Anne square, the Montpellier and Montpellier are invited to (re) discover this emblematic place of the heritage with an exhibition photo installed Place Sainte-Anne, on the forecourt of the church, from May 27 to June 15, which traces its history over time.

“”Weeding“, The JR event exhibition, from June 26 to December 7, 2025

The artist JR presents the exhibition “Weeding“, An exploration of the memory of places and souls through a monumental and collaborative tree. The Montpellier and Montpellier invited to participate numerous in the work of JR. This monumental installation will be composed of the hands of printed visitors, to leave its imprint at the Sainte-Anne square.
