Sexual support is a moment of privacy offered to a person with disabilities in demand for sex. In Belgium, there are twenty French -speaking supporters to offer this service, framed by the ASBL Aditi. Among them, Michèle, 38 years old at the time of testimony, in 2019.
“It was following a TV report that I contacted the ADITI association. It was at a time when I felt the desire to give another direction to my life, next to my work. I needed to fill something in the equation ‘to give and receive’. Impressed by the very human project and the seriousness of the non-profit organization, I wanted to know what was the structure that underlined it. My decision made-after a long period of reflection- Specificities of the sexuality of people with disabilities. ”
It was only after a year and a half that Daditi offers Michèle to ensure his first performance, in a man with deep autism. “Very nervous at the beginning, he relaxed little by little, because I took the time to let him touch me. Before leaving, his mother took me in my arms to thank me. This moment was very precious for me. I saw that I could help someone offering him a little tenderness and pleasure. In those I frequent regularly, I see the change: they become quieter and fulfilled. His forgotten handicap, the person feels listened to and considered. Doctors, nurses or families point out these changes to us. ”
Sexual support or prostitution?
“I have a lot of respect for sex workers, says Michèle, but the criteria of the two activities are different. In prostitution, motivation is money. In sexual support, it is care, intimacy and well-being of people with disabilities. Institutions and Aditi are trying to fill these aspects by managing the process that goes from the demand to the concrete service. Déclic is not done, the service is not realized. ”
Show humanity
Whoever collaborates with Aditi for purely material reasons would not hold up on the duration. “” “You have to feel good about yourself and show a lot of humanity to be able to do it. Moreover, people with disabilities who have a very special meaning of human relationships, like autistic people, immediately feel if someone is not sincere with them. In this case, they block. On the other hand, there are not enough requests so that we can live from this activity. We receive 100 € for support. You have to move to the institution where the person or at home lives … After each service, we call Aditi for a feedback which is always integrated into a framework of care and well-being managed by professionals. All this takes minimum three hours. ”
Whether disabled, older or simply ‘different’, I see unique human beings.
Michèle explains to us that the practice brings her a lot on a personal level. “When I am told: ‘You do not realize the gift you give to me, I am filled by so much kindness and sincerity. It brings me and gives me positive energy. I have always been touched by weakened people. Whether they are disabled, old or simply’ different ‘, I see unique human beings.”
An activity, not a job
All sex accompanying people have a job. It is also a requirement of Aditi. “It can happen for several weeks without being called. Even if it is emotionally heavy, this collaboration suits me because I feel valued by feeling that I bring some light to someone.”
The reaction of the entourage
“I preferred not to talk to my children about it. And if my husband had not agreed, I would not have embarked on this adventure. The only limit that we set together is to avoid too intimate gestures, like that of kissing. This activity taught me to go to the point and no longer spoil my life with small problems. The people with disabilities that I frequent their courage and their joy of living. Their sense of humor, their sincerity and their tenderness are real life lessons, which I get richer. “”
Today, 6 years after her testimony, Michèle ceased her activities to the association, but has lived in good years.
