Ultra-practitioner in her spare time, the overwhelming, however, requires a little skill and training. Under the magnifying glass of our expert couture Marieke Bauw: two recurring problems and their solution!
The overwhelming is used to… overwhelm. It is a question of passing from the wire to the edges of a fabric so that the latter does not frighten or to assemble two fabrics on board for example. In a single step, the overweight assembles, surfing the edges and cuts the excess fabric. It therefore allows an impeccable finish, especially when the materials are expandable.
A bad tension
“You are afraid to modify the tension of your overweighter? It is true that one generally advises not to touch these small casters. But however, know that certain fabrics require a particular tension, recalls Marieke Bauw. If you overwhelm a light poplin for example, some wires will have to be more or less tense to obtain a nice point of above.” While for a thick denim, other tensions will be required.
It is therefore better to inform you. “Consult the manual to find out the standard tension of your overwhelming (each manufacturer has his). You no longer have the manual? Look online by typing your type of overwhelmer + ‘manual’ to find the digital version.”
A bad thread
To use your overwhelmer optimally, you must absolutely know the function of each wire. “The trick to fully understand the operation of your machine is to put on wires of different colors and overwhelm them on a piece of fabric. You will understand perfectly what wire does what and if you have to increase or decrease certain tensions.”
As always sewing, do not rush and take the time to test your equipment several times before you get into your project.
