With age, the skin loses its elasticity and hydration and, as a result, becomes thinner and drier. Mature skin therefore requires a suitable routine. Which makeup to choose? We take stock.
“Adopting a routine that brightens the complexion and highlights the assets, without ever giving up hydration, this is the secret to a natural and luminous result after 60,” assures Philippe Meysmans, professional makeup artist at L’Oréal Paris. Want to know how to adapt your routine to the changing texture of your skin? Follow his valuable advice.
In general, do not put too much makeup on your eyes, as this risks weakening them and closing your eyes.
1. Moisturize every day
As we age, the skin tends to become dehydrated and drier. “Never skip the hydration step before moving on to makeup,” warns Philippe Meysmans. “No need to choose creams that are too rich: during the day, favor fluid and light treatments. You can, however, apply a slightly more nourishing cream in the evening, after removing make-up,” he explains.
2. Choose the right foundation
After letting your day cream soak in, move on to make-up. First step: foundation. To choose the right one, focus on the texture: “Avoid covering materials which will tend to give you a completely plastered complexion and accentuate small wrinkles. If you opt for a liquid foundation, do not use too much material and spread it as much as possible over the entire face, using a brush for a beautiful finish.” If you have opted for a tinted cream, you can apply it perfectly with your fingers.
And in terms of color, how do we do it? “If, as you age, your skin has lost its pigmentation, use the color of your hair to choose your foundation. If you have white or gray hair, opt for a cool color (with pink highlights). If you have natural hair or color with warm highlights, opt for a foundation with golden highlights,” specifies the specialist.
3. Choose the right concealer
Concealer is the beauty product that is most often neglected as we age. Indeed, it is a product that tends to be drier and leave marks if the skin is already dehydrated. Pro tip: “Turn to lightweight textures that are less likely to sink into fine lines. As for the shade, opt for a tone lighter than your skin tone, the purpose of the concealer being (in addition to reducing dark circles) to bring light to the face”.
For a light and long-lasting result, be careful when applying: “Spread a few drops of product, and tap with your finger rather than spreading”. Note that concealer is not only used under the eyes: “Do not hesitate to work on the highlights of the face by applying a little to the middle of the forehead, under the eyebrows, the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, Cupid’s bow and chin”.
4. Choose a strengthening mascara
The older we get, the more dry and sensitive our eyes become. “Opt for a mascara whose texture nourishes the eyelashes in addition to thickening them,” advises the makeup artist.
5. Avoid mattifying powders
According to Philippe Meysmans, “mattifying powders tend to get into dark circles and fine lines, and accentuate them”. In general, avoid powder unless you have oily skin.
6. Think about your eyebrows
Philippe Meysmans is not the only one to say it: “With age, eyebrows can become thinner and less structured”. You can therefore restore density to sparse areas using your eyebrow pencil. Here you will find our tips for making up your eyebrows to perfection.
7. Don’t put too much makeup on your eyes
“Avoid glittery, shiny, satin or pearly eyeshadows. Shine tends to bring out small wrinkles near the eyes,” assures the pro. And added: “In general, do not put too much makeup on your eyes, as this risks weakening them and closing your eyes. A little mascara and a line of pencil will do the trick.” You can nevertheless apply your eye shadow to the outer corners of the eyes, just to keep the inner part of theeye well open.
8. Brighten your face with blush
For the cheeks, on the other hand, it’s quite the opposite: “Opt for a satin blush, which offers better transparency and is less likely to stain. During the day, choose an orange color which gives a healthy glow in daylight. For the evening, opt for a pink color, which looks better in artificial light.”
9. Highlight your mouth
“Lipstick is the key element of your makeup,” says the makeup artist. So if we put less makeup on the eyes, which have become more fragile, we don’t hesitate to highlight the mouth. “Avoid nude colors and matte lipsticks which tend to get into all the fine lines. And go for a rather shiny lipstick.”
10. Aim for lightness
The final word? “Keep one thing in mind: the most beautiful makeup for mature skin is the most natural makeup. No more thick, covering textures, your skin craves lightness.”
