Do you often lose your belongings? Here is the ultimate trick of a memory champion so that it does not happen!

Keys, telephone, bank card … Do you tend to go beyond everything? We asked Florian Manicardi, vice-champion of France in memory in 2022, a trick to avoid these “fails”.

According to a French study relayed in the Parisian, we would spend an average of 1.5 hours per month to seek personal effects, or two whole months on the scale of a lifetime! The palm of lost objects? Identity cards, wallets, keys, smartphones and glasses. We also know, according to a survey carried out by Hotels.com with 400 hotels, that a quarter of customers forget one or more objects when leaving their room. The most forgotten object? The phone charger!

Frustration and waste of time

Losing an object of everyday or intimate is not an easy task. It is not only a waste of time – that devoted to stirring heaven and earth to find it -, but also a loss of money, without counting frustration, a mixture of anger and sadness that can remain long after loss. Because, even if it is “only an object”, as for any loss, mourning is necessary.

A mental charge question

For Florian Manicardi, vice-champion of France of memory in 2022 and now trainer in memory with the general public (follow him on YouTube), losing his things is not so much a problem of memory as of lack of attention. “We lose your phone because you put it somewhere in automatic mode. We do it thinking about something else. This phenomenon happens all the more frequently as we have a high mental charge ”.

Distraction is not so much a problem of memory as a lack of attention and concentration

For the champion, who admits to being himself the victim of distraction sometimes, this habit can also come from a lack of rehearsal: “If you have tied up important papers 10 years ago, it is normal to not remember wherever you they are. To remember something, repetition is necessary ”.

“I lose everything”: the infallible thing

To prevent us from ending up nicknamed you “the one who always loses everything”, Florian Manicardi has a relentless tip: “When you handle an object, mentally saying – even better, aloud – what you are doing: ‘I put my phone on the furniture in the living room, I put my sports card in the office drawer, I put my headphones in the right pocket of my jacket …’. This habit will allow you to clearly aware of your action and remember where you have put your things. ”

When is it alarming?

Be careful that distraction, if it sometimes makes you smile, is not always so harmless as that. It can be a symptom of depression, burn-out, a sequelae of cranial trauma, be linked to taking certain drugs (antidepressants, for example) or, more serious and if it becomes systematic, the warning sign of a neuro-degenerative disease-which manifests itself by a degradation of short-term memory. In another register, it is also the most common symptom of ADD/H, attention disorder with or without hyperactivity. To take the eye, therefore!
